Barbara Aline Blanchard has been working in clay since 1998.
She was initially attracted to a workshop entitled "The Tile As Art"
which references the Arts and Crafts movement of the 19th century, in
which artists such as Winslow Homer and William Morris produced
paintings on clay.
Paintings on clay are timeless. Mosaics from
Grecian and Roman times still exist today, barely worn.
Aline at first began to view clay as just another
surface on which to paint. She had long used modeling paste and collaged
objects to add texture to her work, so creating her painting on clay
made intuitive sense.
Soon, however, the clay exerted its
personality and demanded equal billing with the glazes. Aline allowed the
clay to speak first.
Each bas-relief tile is an original and is mounted
on a surface textured and painted to complement the piece.
